He can sing, he can golf, and he can power lift. K.J. Choi is a real Renaissance Man. But the 54-year-old is going (somewhat) viral for an unexpected reason this week: giving a bunker lesson.
The PGA Tour Champions shared a video of the eight-time PGA Tour winner giving some advice for escaping the sand. And it’s one of the wildest-looking golf tips we’ve ever seen.
Check out Choi demonstrating—and explaining—his hammer swing in which he starts with a golf club over his head before smashing it down into the sand. Over and over again.
Have you ever seen this drill? 👀

Unique is one way to put it. Like we said, that’s a wild-looking drill right there. And as expected, Golf Twitter had a field day with it:
Commonly known as "the Sergio" https://t.co/TKBRoVKap9

Maybe my 2 year old daughter already “has it”? She has perfected this drill around the house https://t.co/GwGwPtv0Az

I usually do that after I blade it 45 yards over the green into the picture window of a house.

And one more poke at Sergio. For obvious reasons.
I’ve seen Garcia do that a few times. But only during a round

But as funny as some of those responses are, you probably shouldn’t knock it until you try it. So, thanks, K.J. As Choi says in the video, he does this to work on keeping his grip and club-face angle the same throughout his bunker swing.
And as he mentions, the hammer swing can also help add power. You always hear golf instructors talking about that nice “THUMP” you want to produce out of the sand in order to properly utilize the bounce on your wedge. Well, you’re definitely going to hear some thumps practising like this. You just also might get some weird looks.
