Geoff Ogilvy, captain of the International team for the 2026 Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club, thinks his side has been making headway in the biennial matches the past few years in a way that is reminiscent of the European team when it was inching closer to defeating the American squad in the early to mid-1980s.

After losing by just one point at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., in 1983, the Europeans felt that winning was just around the corner. And they were right. They beat the U.S. team in 1985 at The Belfry 16½-11½ and then followed up with an even more satisfying 15-13 triumph in ’87 at Muirfield Village Golf Club, their first victory on American soil. Since then, Europe has won 11 more times, including its rousing 15-13 win two weeks ago at Bethpage Black. In that same stretch, the U.S. has six wins while the 1989 edition ended in a tie.

Ogilvy wasn’t suggesting that the dam will burst in the same way for the Internationals if they can ever find a way of winning for the first time since their lone victory in 1998 in Melbourne, Australia. He just knows that it was difficult for Europe to break through and only did so after gradual progress.

“The Europeans, when they talk about their history through the Ryder Cup, a lot of their pre-tournament content [before Bethpage] was based on their history,” Ogilvy said Tuesday during a conference call with U.S. counterpart Brandt Snedeker from Medinah, near Chicago. “They talked about how powerful it was to finally start winning, and it took them a really long time to do that. It probably feels like we’re in a similar situation to where they were before they sort of cracked the code.”

Though the score isn’t necessarily indicative of close matches, Ogilvy said the last three losses have given the International team some encouragement.

“We can kind of feel like we can taste it, and we’ve got the ingredients right now that we had been missing before,” he said. “I think we’ve still got some gaps to fill, and clearly winning something for the first time or in a very long time is probably more difficult than if you’re winning all the time.

“We’re trying to get closer all the time. We’re getting closer.”

Brandt Snedeker says he learned a lot serving under captain Keegan Bradley at the Ryder Cup. Jared C. Tilton

The 16th Presidents Cup is scheduled for Sept. 24-27 at the No. 3 Course at Medinah. The U.S. leads the series 14-1-1, with the lone tie coming in 2003 in South Africa.

Medinah is an intriguing venue for the matches, given its history. It was the site of the famed “Miracle at Medinah,” the 2012 Ryder Cup that saw the European team rally from a four-point deficit the final day to register a shocking one-point victory. Snedeker was a member of the American team that year.

Last year, Ogilvy and his co-designers at OCM Golf completed a total overhaul of the No. 3 Course, transforming it from a tree-lined parkland layout into more of a links-style course.

Hard not to think that the Americans aren’t the only “home” team this time around.

A rookie in 2012 as a captains pick by Davis Love III, Snedeker saw first-hand how fast momentum can swing, and as a vice-captain to Keegan Bradley at Bethpage, he was witness to another home-course advantage extinguished by a European onslaught the first two days that America could not overcome despite a furious singles push.

“You’re always learning something, taking in every situation possible,” Snedeker said. “And I think Bethpage … there’s a lot of positives to take away. I really enjoyed the job Keegan did and how he worked in the position he put the guys in and the amount of time he spent getting to know each player and understanding what their needs were.

“So taking a lot from it, and then, you know, each captain sees a little different. Each team’s gonna be different. There’s not one cookie cutter model of how to do this, so I’m going to kind of use the best I’ve seen from all the captaincies I’ve been around and kind of make it my own, in a sense.”

A four-time assistant captain before being elevated to the top post, Ogilvy has “had some chats” with two-time winning European captain Luke Donald and might pick his brain further in the coming months. Asked if there is anyone else whom he might seek out for advice on cracking the code, Ogilvy responded, “We’ll tell you once we do.”

Following the shocking selection of Keegan Bradley as the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup captain, a more predictable succession plan for the U.S. Presidents Cup team was unveiled Tuesday with the PGA Tour naming Brandt Snedeker as captain for the 2026 American squad that will compete at Medinah Country Club outside Chicago. Meanwhile, the long-suffering International Team has turned to Australia’s Geoff Ogilvy, a four-time assistant captain whose course design firm, OCM was responsible for the two-year renovation at Medinah no. 3 before the course reopened last summer.

At 44, Snedeker is a relatively recent addition to the U.S. captaincy pipeline—he was an assistant under Jim Furyk at Royal Montreal for the last Presidents Cup, and will be one of Keegan Bradley’s vice captains at Bethpage this fall. His playing résumé boasts nine PGA Tour wins, including the 2012 Tour Championship, but only one appearance playing for the U.S. Presidents Cup team, when he went 2-3-0 at Muirfield Village in 2013. He also played in two Ryder Cups—the Americans’ 2012 loss at Medinah and the 2016 victory at Hazeltine—going 4-2-0 over the two events.

“It’s a tremendous honour to be named U.S. team captain for the 2026 Presidents Cup by my peers,” Snedeker said in a press release, “and I’m looking forward to leading our guys into Medinah for what will certainly be an amazing week of golf.”

“Brandt Snedeker is among the game’s most respected players and one who has garnered the utmost admiration from his peers throughout his 21-year career, which was most recently recognised as he received the 2024 Payne Stewart Award for his outstanding character and sportsmanship,” added PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. “I know he will be a tremendous captain and asset for the U.S. Team in 2026.”

Ogilvy, 47, has been groomed for the International captaincy for longer than Snedeker, serving his first assistant captaincy at Liberty National in 2017. That followed his playing career in the Presidents Cup, when in three appearances he posted a 7-6-1 record—more impressive than it looks, considering the Internationals lost all three. Ogilvy has eight PGA Tour wins to his name, the capstone of which was his 2006 U.S. Open victory at Winged Foot. He’s also won two of the “Australian majors,” capturing both the Australian Open and Australian PGA.

“Since Ernie Els debuted the shield in 2019, the International Team’s spirit has intensified and grown as we have rallied around this symbol, which embodies our shared ambition and unifies both players and fans,” Ogilvy said. “I intend to carry that momentum forward, just as the captains before me have, to build strong support for our international players in the lead up and throughout the event.”

Ogilvy will have some intimate knowledge of the course this time around, considering the work OCM did in renovating the No. 3 course at Medinah—a renovation that includes larger greens and an entirely new routing—but he’ll still have his work cut out for him. Although two of the last three Cups hosted on International soil were relatively close, it has been a history of lopsided wins for the Americans when they play at home, dating back to the second Presidents Cup, when the Americans won by just a single point in 1996. In all, the Americans have won the last 10 Cups, and hold a 13-1-1 all-time lead.

Two weeks after a rather chippy Presidents Cup, Paul Tesori has come to Tom Kim’s defence regarding allegations that Team USA players cursed at the 22-year-old Korean during the Presidents Cup. But the veteran caddie also wishes his player had handled the situation differently in the aftermath.

Tesori appeared on SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio with hosts Brian Crowell and Frank Darby on Sunday and talked about tensions flaring at Royal Montreal to the point of bad sportsmanship.

“I witnessed three scenarios where members of the U.S. team emphatically got personal with Tom, and, yes, you know, cursed at him,” Tesori said. “And at the end of the day, no one wants that.”

Tesori didn’t name names, but added, “These two guys that had done it, I don’t think that’s in their character at all.” Kim wasn’t the only International player to call out the Americans. Ben An called out Wyndham Clark’s behaviour in a tweet that was deleted.

Some will say that, of course, Tesori is going to defend his player no matter what happened. But Tesori is also one of the most respected caddies on tour. And he also provided constructive criticism for Kim during the interview.

More on that in a bit, but first, a reminder of what happened. Kim’s claim on Saturday evening at the Presidents Cup that American players cursed at him during his match drew plenty of attention. The following day, Kim said he sought out Xander Schauffele and U.S. captain Jim Furyk to clear the air after his final match on Sunday during Team USA’s latest lopsided victory in the biennial competition.

“I just told him [Schauffele] like, hey, I didn’t mean it to go in such a negative way,” Kim said. “If it did, I just said I’m sorry. It was just I felt like what I heard yesterday, some comments that I’ve heard was at that time, just coming off the green, it came to me so personally and just I felt like it was right to share.”

Tesori says the incidents got him worked up as well.

“One of them I witnessed a foot away from me, and the feelings I had inside were very New York Bethpage-y,” Tesori said. “I wanted to react physically and I was upset by what had happened. But at the end of the day, I also know the character of the person that this happened I don’t believe is that way, and Tom handled it really well.”

But that’s where Tesori disagreed with his boss.

“Now, there’s no reason for him to go in the media and we know in the world we live in now, even if there was video proof of what happened, half the world is going to think he’s being a baby and the other half is going to think he’s viable,” Tesori said.

Here’s the full clip:

Caddie Paul Tesori commented on the controversy surrounding the matches between Tom Kim and the US Team at the @PresidentsCup during On Course with @Fdarbs and Brian Crowell.

Take a Listen. pic.twitter.com/kmKY0Cf2sw

— SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio (@SiriusXMPGATOUR) October 6, 2024

Tesori noted that Golf Channel’s Rex Hoggard backed up Kim’s claims that Saturday night, “But yet nobody pays attention to that.”

“It’s only two of the 24 guys who acted in a way that I’d be embarrassed to act, but Tom has to have thick skin,” Tesori adds. “And at the end of the day, you can’t go to the media and pronounce that, you have to go talk to your captains about it, talk to your teammates about it, and it’s a learning experience for Tom.”

After calling out the American team for “cursing at us” on Saturday at the Presidents Cup, International team star Tom Kim said he made sure to clear the air with U.S. captain Jim Furyk as well as Xander Schauffele after his Sunday singles match against Sam Burns wrapped up at Royal Montreal.

Kim, who finished the week with a record of 1-2-1, was part of a testy afternoon foursomes match on Saturday evening against U.S. stalwarts Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay. Kim’s partner, Si Woo Kim, pulled off a heroic chip-in birdie at the par-3 16th, then hit the American team with his favourite NBA player Stephen Curry’s famous “night night” celebration. The one glaring problem with that was the match had just been tied and there were still two holes to play.

Unfortunately for the Kim pairing, they lost the 18th after halving 17 on a Cantlay birdie, making the “night night” celebration look foolish in retrospect. Some members of the U.S. side, particularly Wyndham Clark, clearly took offence. Clark could be seen doing the celebration after Cantlay and Schauffele secured the full point, and then he ended up on a social media battle with International team member Byeong Hun An.

“As it got towards the end, it got a little feisty out there,” Tom Kim said Saturday night. “I could hear some players cursing at us. That part wasn’t really — I don’t think there was good sportsmanship there. But it’s all part of the fun. I understand it.”

Kim clarified that he had plenty of fun showing some emotion, too, but he still believed the Americans crossed a line. He did not clarify what was said, nor who said it, though.

“You see me out there throwing fist pumps and jumping on the green,” he added. “It’s all part of it, I get it. I just don’t think there’s a need to look at someone and curse at them. I just don’t think there’s a need for it.”

Kim did say he didn’t want his comments to come across as negative, but they did draw plenty of criticism on social media. On Sunday, he made it a point to seek out Furyk and Schauffele to explain exactly what he meant by his comments, and he revealed what he said to them in the International team’s post-Presidents Cup press conference.

“I just told him [Schauffele] like, hey, I didn’t mean it to go in such a negative way,” said Kim. “If it did, I just said I’m sorry. It was just I felt like what I heard yesterday, some comments that I’ve heard was at that time, just coming off the green, it came to me so personally and I just felt like it was right to share.

“Definitely, I didn’t really at that time, just didn’t think it would be so negative. I really didn’t mean to — because when I played with Patrick and Xander, obviously we’ve battled a few times and they’ve always been such great competitors. They’ve never — I’ve always felt like there’s such a good sportsmanship between us. It was just outside the ropes, and I felt like that was a little misunderstanding on my part, which I should have explained better. So I went to him and I said, I didn’t mean it that way. I apologise if it came out wrongly. It was just this and this happened, but if it affected you guys so negatively, I really do apologise. I didn’t mean to do it in that way.

“This event is all about doing things you would never do and creating energy and doing all these things. I do certain things on the greens when I make putts, and I expect them to do the same thing. It’s all part of the game. It was just about that.”

Tarps off. Bet paid off.

When Alison Lee holed out a shot two weeks ago at the Solheim Cup her caddie and partner Megan Khang’s caddie both took their shirts off in the middle of the fairway. The group had a bet to start the match that if any player holed out a shot the caddies, Jack Fulghum and Taylor Takada, would disrobe.

Max Homa was watching the match on television and weighed in by writing, “Tarps off!!! Let’s go @solheimcupUSA.” But his buddy Kevin Kisner added to the discussion, saying that if Homa accomplished a similar feat at the Presidents Cup that Kisner, an assistant captain for the Americans, would take off his shirt.

“I’ll do this in Montreal if you hoop one! Book it,” Kisner responded.

I’ll do this in Montreal if you hoop one! Book it!

Well, Homa holed a wedge shot from 102 yards on the first hole Sunday at Royal Montreal for an eagle in his match against Mackenzie Hughes. Homa’s reaction at the time was understated, but he went on to win 2 and 1 in the final match on the course. The Americans easily won, 18½-11½ to win for the 10th straight time.

So it was up to Kisner to pay off his bet. He was asked about it several times on television and always hinted that he has something in store.

During a celebration, Kisner pulled off his hat, his sunglasses, then his shirt and found Homa, yelling, “way to go Max.” The two had a funny moment, hugged it out and that was it.

Despite unleashing an early scoring barrage, the U.S. found securing its 10th straight victory in the Presidents Cup an arduous task on Sunday—but got it done with a result that seemed like destiny. The Americans eventually put away a stubborn International team at Royal Montreal Golf Club when Keegan Bradley, the U.S. Ryder Cup captain in 2025, registered the winning point by holding off Si Woo Kim, 1 up.

Scottie Scheffler slam-dunked a bunker shot for birdie on the first hole and Max Homa holed out for eagle to begin the last game as the Americans seized a series of early leads in singles only to watch the International squad claw back repeatedly throughout the sunny and calm afternoon in Quebec.

In the end, however, the Americans, who began the day with an 11-7 lead, were able to close out the contest by winning the necessary 4½ points in the first six matches from its top-heavy lineup, and they went on to register an 18½-11½ victory. The result left the International team without a victory since its lone triumph in 1998 in Australia. It last avoided a loss in 2003 with a tie in South Africa.

Five matches had yet to be completed when the U.S. locked up the victory to improve to 13-1-1 in the series that began in 1994. The Internationals get their next shot to end their losing streak in 2026 at Medinah Country Club in Illinois.

“We’ve put a lot of heart and soul into it. Ultimately these players were amazing,” said U.S. captain Jim Furyk, who erased the disappointment of being the losing captain at the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris. “It was a really good group of 12, an easy bunch. I had great leadership at the top. They made the captain’s job really easy, and these guys played their hearts out this week, and they really played well on the back nine.

“We talked about being a dog all week, being the tougher team. I just feel like those back nine holes if you looked at how many holes won and lost, I’ve got to feel like we kind of owned the back nine this week, and that was the difference.”

Bradley, who originally was asked to be an assistant to captain Jim Furyk, instead became one of Furyk’s wild-card picks and was relieved of his assistant duties. Playing in the Presidents Cup for the first time since 2013, the former PGA Championship winner delivered the deciding point after trailing Kim at the turn. He flipped the match with wins on four of the first five holes on the inward nine but had to hang on when Kim won the 16th and 17th to extend the proceedings to the par-4 home hole. The two halved the last with pars but only after Kim missed a birdie try from eight feet. Bradley celebrated more with relief than excitement and enjoyed an extended hug with Furyk.

“Wow, that was incredible,” a smiling Bradley said. “I was saying all week I didn’t know if I’d ever get to do this again. To just play in this tournament and then to win the point, my goodness, the last time I played, I was the point to lose the Ryder Cup [in 2014]. If this is my last round as a player, maybe it is, I’m happy with that.

“Geez, I’m still trying to figure out how all this happened,” he added. “A month ago, I wasn’t even in the BMW, and then we were here and then the Presidents Cup point.”

Xander Schauffele, who won the clinching point two years ago at Quail Hollow Club, converted seven birdies in his first 13 holes and closed out Jason Day in the opening match, 4 and 3. That restored the five-point lead the Americans forged when it swept the opening four-ball session on Thursday.

Little else seemed to come easy for the visitors, though they still managed to pull away for the fourth largest margin of victory in the series.

In the second game, Tom Kim made a late push to erase a two-hole deficit to Sam Burns, but Burns held on to earn a half-point to complete a 3-0-1 performance and finish the week as the only unbeaten player on either team. Russell Henley then closed out Sungjae Im, 3 and 2 and Patrick Cantlay subdued Canada’s Taylor Pendrith 3 and 1.

Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama stopped Scheffler, 1 up, in a match that featured 13 birdies. It was one of the few highlights for the International team. Another was Canada’s Corey Conners blitzing Tony Finau, 5 and 3, after losing two of the first three holes. The only other win came from Christiaan Bezuidenhout, who beat Brian Harman, 2 and 1.

Homa, who holed out for eagle from 103 yards on opening hole, applied the final dagger to the home fans with his 2-and-1 decision over Canada’s Mackenzie Hughes.

“I take a lot away from this. We’re close,” said International captain Mike Weir, a Canadian native. “A lot of these matches were so close. It’s disappointing not to get a win. We put our team together to win this thing, and when you don’t get a win, it’s disappointing, but a lot of great things to take away.”

Tom Kim’s theatrical performance at the Presidents Cup may have worn thin with American fans. But according to Kim, it’s the U.S. side that crossed a line.

Following a loss to Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele on Saturday evening, Kim accused players from the United States of cussing at him and teammate Si Woo Kim.

“I think the start of the round was definitely a little harder, but as it got towards the end, it got a little feisty out there. I could hear some players cursing at us,” Kim said. “That part wasn’t really — I don’t think there was good sportsmanship there. But it’s all part of the fun. I understand it. So the U.S. Team definitely motivated us to go out there.”

Later in the interview, Kim doubled-down on his assertion: “You see me out there throwing fist pumps and jumping on the green. It’s all part of it, I get it. I just don’t think there’s a need to look at someone and curse at them. I just don’t think there’s a need for it.”

Kim said he didn’t take offence to what was being said, although did not clarify what was said and by who.

“I understand it. I don’t get hurt about it,” Kim said. “My feelings don’t hurt at all. I hope there’s no negative comments. That’s not what I’m trying to do here. I just feel like there’s always little things, like what could I have done better? It’s just certain things like that. I put my partner in some tough positions, and that to me is the most frustrating part of the day.”

When Cantlay and Schauffele entered the press room and were asked about the situation, both said they had no idea what Kim was talking about.

“I mean, I can speak for myself. I felt like Pat and I, we treated the Kims with the utmost respect,” Schauffele said. “We’re trying to quiet the crowds down when they were hitting. We’re trying to quiet the crowd — go back on film, quiet the crowds down when we were hitting. It was fair take, give and go. I have no clue if anyone was doing any of that. I don’t believe any of our guys would do something like that. So I’m not sure what he was hearing.”

Kim is 1-2 in three matches at the Presidents Cup. He plays Sam Burns in a singles match on Sunday.

Tom Kim has been the lifeblood of the Presidents Cup for the International team this week, and as his team tried to claw back from an 8-6 deficit Saturday afternoon, he was engaged in a tough alternate-shot battle with Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele.

On the seventh hole of that match, a par 3, his partner Si Woo Kim’s birdie putt ended close enough that Kim thought it should have been conceded by the Americans.

Alas, it was not, and after making the par, Kim did not hesitate to show his displeasure … twice. Watch his peeved reaction here:

You giving this one to the @IntlTeam? pic.twitter.com/wmhZA5e9iD

— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) September 28, 2024

Hell yeah! It’s the old “inside the leather” complaint, the likes of which we’ve seen from Justin Thomas in the past.

Now, you could easily say that complaining about this stuff is bush league—there’s no real that you have to concede even the shortest putt, and Kim’s Internationals teammate, Jason Day, once said that he’d only concede short putts to a player who had never missed one in his life.

But by walking back and making his point, head shaking the whole time, Kim was ratcheting up the tension in a match he was feeling his team needs to win.

That’s been his style all week, starting when he fought a shouting battle with Scheffler on Thursday. Maybe it works, and maybe it doesn’t, but it proves he can be both the hero AND the villain of this Presidents Cup.

We’ve barely reached the back nine on Thursday at the Presidents Cup and there’s already some bad blood between the U.S. and International teams. The most shocking part? It appears to be between best buds Scottie Scheffler and Tom Kim.

It started with what seemed like some innocent trash talk, Kim making a long birdie putt at the par-3 seventh and celebrating accordingly. Then Scheffler answered and shouted “WHAT WAS THAT?!” in Kim’s direction. Kim laughed it off, but Scheffler certainly didn’t look like he was messing around.

On the very next green, Kim and partner Sungjae Im holed a birdie putt first. Then the International duo walked off the green and made their way to the ninth tee. The problem? Scheffler still had a birdie look to tie the hole and keep he and Russell Henley’s 2 up lead. During a normal tour event, finishing up and walking to the next tee while a playing partner still needs to finish is a perfectly fine way to keep the pace of play moving. During a match play, team event where your opponent still has a putt to tie? That’s a no-no.

On-course commentator John Wood immediately pointed out Kim and Im’s walk-off, saying “it’s definitely a little bit chippy in this group right now.” Analyst Paul McGinley then asked Wood “so they are not able to see [Scheffler] putting?”

“They are 60 yards away on the ninth tee and they are not watching,” Wood replied.

NBC play-by-play man Dan Hicks smartly teed up McGinley immediately after, asking “what do you think of that Paul?” McGinley did not hold back.

https://twitter.com/ShaneRyanHere/status/1839372616576254394

“That’s bordering on bad behavior there,” McGinley said. “That’s disrespectful, in my opinion. I know it’s competitive out there, but it certainly shows you there’s an underlying edge here that it’s not all funs and games.”

Scheffler went on to miss the putt, earning Kim and Im a much-needed win to cut the match to 1 down. They havled the ninth, then Scheffler drained a 25-footer for birdie at the 10th, leading to a muted reaction. Kim followed by holing his 20-footer for birdie to halve. Through 10 holes, Scheffler and Henley still lead, 1 up. Should be a very, very interesting finish in this match. Let’s hope everyone is on their best behaviour.

We owe Scottie Scheffler an apology. We were not familiar with his (trash talk) game.

Sure, the World No. 1 has shown a fiery side on the course before, but it’s usually directed inward. Or, sometimes, directed at his caddie Ted Scott, which is nothing Teddy isn’t used to as Bubba Watson’s former bag man. Other than that, though, it often seems as though the two-time Masters winner would not hurt a fly.

But something awoke inside of Scheffler on Thursday at Royal Montreal, where he and partner Russell Henley were pitted against the formidable squad of Tom Kim and Sungjae Im in their opening four-ball match. Those paying close attention to golf this year would know that Scheffler and Kim are very good buddies, which was on full display at the Travelers Championship in June. The two were battling down the stretch for a trophy, yet the entire time they looked like they were yucking it up together in a member-guest.

That was not the case at the par-3 seventh, where Kim holed a long birdie putt to seemingly cut Scheffler and Henley’s lead to 1 down. At least that’s how Kim acted as he celebrated the conversion. Unfortunately, the best player on planet earth still had a birdie putt, too, and he drilled it, turned to Kim and screamed “WHAT WAS THAT?!?!”

You’ll often notice that in moments like this during the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup, that the opponents will generally fist-bump after. Maybe say “nicely done.” Smalls signs of respect. The most famous case of this was Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy during Sunday singles at the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine. The two went blow for blow but each time made sure to give each other props, even laughing at the absurdity of the entire match at a few points.

Kim seemed to laugh this one off but Scottie … kind of didn’t? Guy seemed legitimately fired up. Friendship goes out the window in these team events, which is a good thing in our humble opinion. Knowing Scheffler, though, he’ll probably apologise to Kim later and say something like “I don’t know what came over me!” Too good of a guy.
