The biggest news of the week on the LPGA happened early in the week, even before the first ball went in the air at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship. Former World No. 1 Stacy Lewis, a four-time All-American at Arkansas and two-time major champ, announced Wednesday that she was going to retire at the end of the year.
Now age 40, the 13-time LPGA winner and two-time U.S. Solheim Cup captain, wants to spend more time with her family and said that her body has told her that now is the right time.
Unfortunately, over the next four days the tournament was only able to get in 18 holes because of dangerous weather and rain for the better part of three days. They believed they’d be able to get to play more on Sunday at Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers, but more than 3 inches of rain fell overnight and officials didn’t see a reasonable plan for finishing. So the originally-scheduled 54-hole event only saw 18 holes, which makes it unofficial.
The original purse was $3 million with the winner taking home $450,000 for the first-place prize. But $2 million was distributed—which is $500,000 more than LPGA rules stipulate is required—and those further down the leaderboard were given $3,500. So, Sarah Schmelzel and Minami Katsu, for shooting eight-under 63, ended at the top and each took home $183,095. Again, it will not be considered an official LPGA victory.
