Holes-in-one are golf’s most sought after—and most controversial—feat. Every golfer wants one, and yet most would be quick to tell you not every ace counts. Par-3 courses, simulators, ricochets and provisionals have been litigated time and time again on these pages and countless others. But just when you thought you had seen all the possible loopholes and permutations, a golfer has now gone viral for draining a 65-yard one WITH HIS PUTTER at Cliffhangers, Big Cedar Lodge’s dramatic new take on the par-3 course. Check it out.

Are you counting this as a hole-in-one?

First of all, let’s give credit where credit is due: that’s a hell of a putt. Is it a hell of an ace though? We can’t answer that for you, but it does have three strikes going against it—it happened on a par-3 course on a 65-yard hole with a putter. In baseball (and several states’ justice systems), three strikes means you’re out. Sorry folks, we don’t make the rules. Heck, we can’t even tell you who did.
Of course, the counter argument is that this golfer was simply following the rules of the course. The sign said “putting only,” so he pulled out the flatstick. What else do you want the guy to do? Finally, on the most basic level, the ball went in the hole in a single stroke. If that isn’t the literal definition of a hole-in-one, we don’t know what it is.
We’ll let you fight the rest amongst yourselves, but whatever the verdict, we’re guessing this guy is too busy buying drinks for half of Missouri to care.
